Adding PubMed to your Bookshelf Reference Search


By default Bookshelf will allow you to search three different web based search tools for getting more information on a term, phrase, or item of interest. It is possible to add more websites to seach with in Bookshelf. The following article will explain how you can add PubMed to your list of search engines inside of Bookshelf.

In order to use this plug-in you will need to be connected to the internet, just as you would for the other search choices.

Installing the PubMed Plug-in to Bookshelf - Windows

Steps for installing the PubMed Plug-in in Windows XP/Vista/7:

  • Click on the Download the PubMed Plug-in below.
  • Click the Save button when asked if you want to save or open the file PubMed-Plugin.zip, save the file to your Desktop
  • Once the PubMed-Plugin.zip has been downloaded to your computer, double click on it to open it.
  • Right Click on the MoreReferences file and select Cut
  • Go to the following folder: My Documents/My Books/VitalSource Bookshelf/User Data
  • Right Click and Paste the MoreReferences file in your User Data Folder.
  • Launch Bookshelf, go to Edit Menu > Preferences and choose the References tab.
  • You will now see PubMed listed in your choices of references.

Installing the PubMed Plug-in to Bookshelf - Mac OS X

Steps for installing the PubMed Plug-in in Mac OS X 10.4 or Later:

  • Click on the Download the PubMed Plug-in below.
  • The file PubMed-Plugin.zip, will be saved to your Downloads folder (Mac OS 10.5 or later) or to your Desktop (Mac OS 10.4) folder.
  • Once the PubMed-Plugin.zip has been downloaded to your computer, double click on it to open it.
  • The file, MoreReferences will be unzipped and placed in the same location as the PubMed-Plugin.zip file.
  • In a new finder window, go to the following folder: Your Home folder > Books > VitalSource Bookshelf > User Data
  • Drag the MoreReferences file from your Downloads|Desktop folder to your User Data Folder.
  • Launch Bookshelf, go to Bookshelf Menu > Preferences and choose the References tab.
  • You will now see PubMed listed in your choices of references.
