"You have Reached the Maximum Number of Activations" - Error Message
The Bookshelf Deauthorization self service tool will allow a user to manage their own machine and mobile devices without the need for contacting a help desk for assistance.

VitalSource Bookshelf allows you to have 2 computers and 2 mobile devices activated at any given time. If you are activating a new computer or mobile device, to view your books and you receive the error message: "You have Reached the Maximum Number of Activations" you will need to deauthorize an older computer or mobile device in order to activate a new one.

The Bookshelf Deauthorization tool requires:
  • Bookshelf 5.4.1 or greater for PC and Mac
  • Bookshelf 1.3 or greater for iOS.


How to use the self service deauthorization tool:
  • Go to the Bookshelf Deauthorization page. and sign in with your user email address and password*.
  • Locate the computer or mobile device name you wish to deauthorize from the list of activated machines and mobile devices** and press the Deauthorize button
  • You will be presented with a pop up asking if you are sure you wish to deauthorize the computer/mobile device, click the OK button to deauthorize the computer/mobile device.
  • You can now activate a new computer or mobile device by launching Bookshelf and signing in with your user email address and password.***
*If you do not know your email address you can reset it here. If you do not know what your computer name is, click here to learn how to locate your machine name.You can log into Bookhself Online and use this tool even if you do not have a license to Bookshelf Online.
**If your computer/mobile device doesn't list the version of Bookshelf its using it is because its not running Bookshelf 5.4.1 or greater.
***If you accidently deauthorize the wrong computer/mobile device, simply launch Bookshelf on that computer/mobile device and sign back in with your user email address and password. For detailed instructions on activating a second computer please visit this Kbase article.
