Troubleshooting Installation Errors

While we do not expect any errors during the installation procedure, if you run into issues during the installation process please follow these steps to resolve your issue. For PCs you will typically see two categories of installation issues: .Net errors and Installer errors.

Before you troubleshoot (PC/Mac)
Before installing Bookshelf please make sure your computer:

Troubleshooting .Net Issues (PC Only)
Microsoft .Net is a required component to run VitalSource Bookshelf. The standard Bookshelf installer will download the components it needs to install Microsoft .Net on your computer before installing Bookshelf. There are basically 2 types of .Net errors that one will encounter. The standard installer is unable to download the .Net files it needs to install .Net and a corrupt installation of .Net.
If your are unable to download the required .Net files download the VitalSource Combo Installer.
The combo installer: contains everything needed for installing VitalSource Bookshelf and everything needed to install Microsoft .Net 3.5SP1 in one container. The installer will not need to downloaded anything else to install Bookshelf on your computer. This installer should only be downloaded if you have had issues downloading/installing Microsoft .Net 3.5 SP1 through the Standard Installer.
If you are receiving error message while trying to install .Net use the .NET Framework Cleanup tool.
The .NET Framework Cleanup: This .NET Framework cleanup tool is designed to automatically perform a set of steps to remove selected versions of the .NET Framework from a computer. It will remove files, directories, registry keys and values and Windows Installer product registration information for the .NET Framework. The tool is intended primarily to return your system to a known (relatively clean) state in case you are encountering .NET Framework installation, uninstallation, repair or patching errors so that you can try to install again.

Troubleshooting Installation Errors (PC Only)
If during the installation process of install VitalSource Bookshelf you encounter an error please follow the following troubleshooting steps:
Uninstall and Reinstall Bookshelf
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel.
  • Locate VitalSource Bookshelf and press the "Remove" button.
  • Once the program has been removed, download and install Bookshelf.
  • If this does not work, follow the steps for creating an installation debug file below.

  • Click on the Download Debug Instructions button to download the PDF of how to create a debug file.
  • Once you have the debug file, go to the VitalSource Community Discussion for Installation Errors.
  • Post a message with the log file. We will evaluate your installation log file and get back in touch with you on how to install Bookshelf.
