Using Bookshelf's Read Aloud Feature

The Bookshelf has text to speech built-in, listen, and follow along as Bookshelf reads to you, using your VoiceOver's built-in voice and speed controls.  Tap the Read Aloud button ( Read_Aloud.png ) to bring up the Read Aloud controls.

Using Read Aloud

Tap the Read Aloud button ( Read_Aloud.png ), press the Play button ( Playback.png ) to begin the read-aloud experience.

Pause ( Pause_TTS.png ), Skip Forward ( Skip_Forward.png ), and Skip Back ( Skip_Back.png ) within your eBook with the read-aloud controls. You can also pause, play, skip forward, and skip back from the lock screen.

Read Aloud Playback

VitalSource Bookshelf will begin its read-aloud playback from your current position in the book.  If you pause read-aloud when you resume playback, Bookshelf will pick up where it left off.

If you want Bookshelf to start reading from a specific section in a book, navigate where you want Bookshelf to begin reading from and press the play button.

When Bookshelf is reading to you, you can navigate throughout the book without pausing the read-aloud function.  As you navigate the book, you can have Bookshelf start reading from where you navigated to in the eBook by pressing the Read from Here pin ( ).  Tap on the Recenter button (  ) to return to where Bookshelf is reading.

As Bookshelf reads aloud, it will highlight the text (or the paragraph, depending on the title) reading in Yellow.

Tap the Read Aloud ( Read_Aloud.png ) button, then tap the Settings ( settings.png ) button to access the Read Aloud settings.

Reading Speed

Tap the Speed down (  ) and Speed Up (  ) buttons to incrementally adjust Bookshelf's read-aloud speed.

Use the Reading Speed scrubber to fine-tune Bookshelf's read-aloud speed.

Change the read-aloud voice used by Bookshelf by tapping on Voice in the settings.  A dialog box will appear with instructions for change the voice used by read-aloud.  Tap on Ok to close the dialog box and begin the process of changing the read-aloud voice.

Choose a voice for Speak Screen and Speak Selection

iOS 13 & 14:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Spoken content
  2. Turn on Speak Screen
  3. Select Voices
  4. Choose the one voice and dialect you would like both Speak Screen and Speak Selection to use.

iOS 11 & 12:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech.
  2. Select Voices.
  3. Choose the one voice and dialect you would like both Speak Screen and Speak Selection to use.

Important: If you change your read-aloud voice to Siri's voice, it will not read in that voice. The reason this is happening is Apple doesn't support 3rd party apps with their Siri's voice.
Please Note: Once you change the Voice, you must close the Read Aloud Toolbar by the Read Aloud ( Read_Aloud.png ) button and then reopening it for the change to take effect.

Read Alt Text

Toggle the Read Alt Text switch to have Bookshelf's read-aloud feature read any descriptions the publishers include with pictures, figures, and diagrams.

Please Note: Once you toggle the Read Alt Text switch, you must close Bookshelf and reopen it for the change to take effect. Not all eBooks have alt text for their pictures, figures, and diagrams. **** On some eTextbooks, the publisher has purposely hardcoded a disclaimer at the end of each page, and the Read Aloud feature will read this disclaimer; this is unable to be avoided.
