Android : Text to Speech

The VitalSource Bookshelf application has the ability to use the built in Text to Speech function on Android to have your books read aloud to you.

How your Book will be Read

  • If you have not opened your book before and you start speaking, the speaker will start at the beginning of the book
  • If you select a chapter or section in the left side TOC, the speaker will start reading at that chapter/section
  • If you tap and select sentences, the speaker will only read the selected text.

How to use Speech

If the scrubber bar is not showing at the bottom of the book screen tap anywhere on the screen one time for it to appear.

Click the button with the three dots at the bottom right of the book and turn Read Aloud to ON

At the top of the book a menu bar will appear. Select the Play button to begin listening. (This turns into a Pause button once you begin reading.) Select the Stop button to end session.

*Note: You will only be able to resume where you left off within the same session. Stopping the session or closing the book restarts you from the beginning.

*NOTE: Text to Speech functionality may not work for all VitalSource titles. Please contact support if you have any issues with your ebook

How to change the Voice Type or Speed

The voice type will not change - this is the voice built into your Android device.

To change the speed click the Speed button on the Read Aloud menu and select the speed at which you wish to listen.
