Bookshelf Will Not Launch

Bookshelf Will Not Launch

There are a few different reasons why your Bookshelf application will not open. One possible reason is that your Desktop application profile is corrupted. Re-installing the application will not fix this issue. Please locate the set of instructions for your Operating system to resolve your issue.

Windows 7/8/8.1/10

  • Step 1 (Uninstalling and recreating My Books folder):
    • Uninstall Bookshelf
    • Go to the Documents folder, delete the My Books folder.
    • Now we are going to re-create that folder manually.
    • In the Documents folder create a new folder and name it "My Books".
    • Open the newly created "My Books" folder and in it create a new folder and name it " VitalSource Bookshelf".
    • Open the VitalSource Bookshelf folder and create two more folders and name one " VitalBook Library" and the other " User Data ".
  • Step 2 (Recreating Shared Books folder - similar steps as above but at a different location):
    • Go to My Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Users > Public > Public Documents > and delete the Shared Books folder.
    • Now we are going to re-create that folder manually.
    • In the Public Documents folder create a new folder and name it "Shared Books".
    • Open the newly created "Shared Books" folder and in it create a new folder and name it " VitalSource Bookshelf".
    • Open the VitalSource Bookshelf folder and create two more folders and name one " VitalBook Library" and the other " User Data ".
  • Step 3 (Restart and Reinstall):
    • Restart your computer
    • Redownload the Bookshelf program from Bookshelf Downloads
    • Launch Bookshelf. It is going to ask you to sign in then download the eBooks. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE EBOOK(S), instead, click Later.
    • In Bookshelf click on Edit > Preferences > under the general tab at the bottom, click on My Books (make sure Shared Books or Custom location is not checked..)
    • click OK, exit Bookshelf, and relaunch it.

  • Go to your Documents folder and locate the Books folder. (Macintosh HD\Users\YourUserAccount\Documents\)
  • Double click on the Books folder, the VitalSource Bookshelf folder, and once again on the User Data Folder.
  • Once you are in the User Data folder, delete everything in the Books folder except for the notes.db file
