Windows: Text to Speech

Windows: Text to Speech

The VitalSource Bookshelf application can use the built-in Text to Speech function in Windows to have your books read aloud to you.

How your Book will read

  • If you have not opened your book before and you start speaking, the speaker will begin at the beginning of the book
  • If you select a chapter or section in the left side TOC, the speaker will begin reading at that chapter/section
  • If you choose sentences with your mouse cursor, the speaker will only read the selected text.

How to change the Voice Type or Speed

Windows 8/8.1/10

If you don’t like the default reader, you can change the voice in your Control Panel.

For Bookshelf 7.6

  • Go to Control Panel > Ease of Access > Speech Recognition
  • Click on Text to Speech in the left-hand side of the window
  • You have three choices for Text to Speech: Microsoft David, Microsoft Hazel, and Microsoft Zira. Select one of these voices (there are only two options in Windows 10)
  • Use the slider to change the Voice speed
  • Select “Apply” then select “OK.”
  • Close the Control Panel Window

For Bookshelf 8

When making changes Bookshelf must be closed.

  1. Select the Start button, and then select Settings (Gear icon on the left).
  2. With the Windows Settings in view, select Time & Language.
  3. Select Speech (on the left pane)
  4. Click Voice: drop down and select a voice. The voices do not state what language they are in; therefore you’ll want to click on the Preview voicebox to sample the voice. (eg. Microsoft David is English, Microsoft Claude is French, Microsoft Raul is Spanish).
  5. Open Bookshelf and the Text-to-Speech settings should now be changed

Windows 7

Microsoft Anna is the default Narrator in Windows 7, and you are only able to change the speed of her voice.

  • Go to Control Panel > Ease of Access > Speech Recognition
  • Click on Text to Speech in the left-hand side of the window
  • Use the slider to change the Voice speed
  • Select “Apply” then select “OK.”
  • Close the Control Panel Window
