VitalSource Bookshelf allows users to read locally stored, DRM-free EPUB files with ease.  To get started,  download and install the latest version of Bookshelf from our Download Page and then follow the steps listed below based on the platform you are using.

Please note, Notes and Highlights will not work with Sideloaded EPUBs and VitalSource Syncing services.  We also cannot guarantee the performance or readability of Sideloaded EPUBs. 

Sideloading EPUBs with Bookshelf on macOS or Windows

  • Downloaded and install the latest version of Bookshelf from the Bookshelf Download Page
  • Launch Bookshelf.  Create or Sign In to your Bookshelf Account
  • Place the EPUB in a secure folder on your computer 
  • Go to the File menu and choose New Folder
  • A new folder will appear in the collection pane, name the new folder (e.g. EPUBS), and press Return
  • Double click on the EPUB to open it in Bookshelf
  • In the Main Bookshelf window click on Recently Viewed, you will see your EPUB listed.  Drag the EPUB from the folder you placed it in, into the new folder that you created in Bookshelf
  • Your EPUB will now be available in Bookshelf
  • To remove the EPUB from Bookshelf click on the EPUB and press the Delete key. When prompted, click OK to delete the book

Please Note: If you Delete or move the EPUB on your computer, Bookshelf will be unable to open it
 

Sideloading EPUBs with Bookshelf on Android

  • Downloaded and install the latest version of Bookshelf from Google Play or the Kindle Fire App Store
  • Launch Bookshelf.  Create or Sign In to your Bookshelf Account
  • Upload the EPUB you want to read on to your favorite Cloud Drive Provider or navigate to the EPUB using your browser
  • Locate the EPUB file in the Cloud Drive app or on your browser
  • Tap on the EPUB file to download the book to your device
  • When asked where to open the file, tap on Bookshelf.
  • Your EPUB will now open in Bookshelf and listed in your Library
 

Sideloading EPUBs with Bookshelf on iOS

  • Downloaded and install the latest version of Bookshelf from the App Store
  • Launch Bookshelf and sign in to your Bookshelf Account
  • Upload the EPUB you want to read on to your favorite Cloud Drive Provider or navigate to the EPUB using your browser
  • Locate the EPUB file in the Cloud Drive app or on your browser
    • In a Cloud Drive App: Tap on the Share icon icon.png and tap on Copy to Bookshelf
    • In a browser: Tap on Open in... and tap on Copy to Bookshelf
  • Your EPUB will now open in Bookshelf and listed in your Library

Please Note: If the Cloud Drive App you are using does not have a Copy to Bookshelf option, log into the service using your browser to add the book to Bookshelf
