NVDA Keyboard Commands

Note: NVDA key refers to the Insert key.

 

Reading Commands

Command

Description

Numpad +

Start reading at the top of the page

NVDA + ↓

Start reading at the current position

Ctrl

Stop Reading

NVDA + ↑ or Numpad 8

Current line

Ctrl + ←/→ or Numpad 4/Numpad 6

Previous/next word

↑ or Numpad 7

Prior line

↓ or Numpad 9

Next line

←/→ or Numpad 1/Numpad 3

Previous/Next character

Insert+F5

Refresh the NVDA virtual buffer.

F5/Ctrl + F5

Page refresh / Hard page refresh. If you get lost, this is how you can start over.

NVDA + Ctrl + ↑/↓

Rate of speech increase/decrease

 

Navigation Commands (for website that is correctly structured and well organized)

To navigate forward and backward through links and form elements on the page, use Tab and Shift + Tab.

Table Navigation Commands

Command

Skip to a table

Ctrl + Alt and ↑/↓/←/→ to move from cell to cell

Navigate between cells

 

Form Navigation Commands

To access a form element, press Enter or NVDA + Spacebar to go into forms mode.

Note: Hotkeys are disabled when you are inserting text in forms mode.

Enter forms mode.

Tab and Shift + Tab

Navigate through the form controls.

Spacebar

Select and deselect checkboxes.

↑/↓

Select from a group of radio buttons.

↑/↓ or the First letter

Select an element in combo/drop down boxes.

Exit forms mode

Enter or NVDA + Spacebar

 

Note: NVDA automatically leaves forms mode when you press Enter to submit the form, navigate to a new page, or select a button.
