Error when opening my book: "This format is no longer supported" (Windows/Mac)

Question 

When I open my book I get the following error: "This format is no longer supported. Update your book or contact the assistance department." How do I fix this? 

Answer

To fix this you will need to remove the affected book(s) from your device and re-download

Bookshelf 8 (Mac/Windows) and higher

  In List View on Bookshelf:

  • Locate the title causing the problem*
  • To the right of the title select the trash can icon
  • Select Remove on the pop up confirming you wish to remove the book from the device.
  • Tap the book cover again to download the new format of the book.

  In Grid View on Bookshelf:

  • Locate the title causing the problem*
  • Tap the three dots at the bottom of the book cover and select Remove from device
  • Select Remove on the pop up confirming you wish to remove the book from the device.
  • Tap the book cover again to download the new format of the book.

* If most or all of the books are causing this error please use the following link on how to mass delete books: Bookshelf 8: removing all books from device

Bookshelf 7.5.1 (Mac) or 7.6.1 (Windows)

  • Locate the title causing the problem
  • Right click the book and select Open Containing Folder (Windows) or View in Finder (Mac)
  • In the window that pops up delete the highlighted *.vbk file
  • If most or all of the books are DashPub format and causing this error delete all the *.vbk files listed in this folder.
  • Restart Bookshelf
  • Double click the book title to re-download 

Overview

With recent updates to Bookshelf some older book formats have undergone a revamp and are longer supported. In order to access your book again you'll want to switch to the new format. It's as simple as removing the old book file from your device and downloading the new format!
